Every packed container needs a verified gross mass on its shipping documents before it can go on a ship. Work it out by either SOLAS method, check it against the container's safety plate, and print a signed declaration.
Rules checked 30 Sept 2026 against AMSA: obtaining a verified gross mass, AMSA: VGM tolerance, enforcement and delays and IMO MSC.1/Circ.1475 VGM guidelines. Official pages are watched weekly for changes.
The figures start as an example. Replace them with your own; they are remembered on this device. Every weight must come from scales that meet trade measurement or AMSA-approved accuracy standards.

Sealed packages marked with an accurate mass don't need weighing again. Method 2 doesn't suit cargo that can't be weighed item by item, such as scrap metal or unbagged grain: weigh the packed container instead.
